Month-long injection of Fifa will wreck many Thai youths’ lives

Re: “Youth warned to avoid life-wrecking World Cup gambling trap”, National, June 15.

There is justified fear that exposure to the month-long Fifa World Cup might trigger a gambling habit in Thai youths or even turn them into addicts.
Youths are especially vulnerable since they spend more time with their friends, away from the watchful eye of parents, in an atmosphere that can encourage gambling.
To immunise them from being sucked into the hype and temptation surrounding football’s biggest festival, we need more than just the ongoing anti-gambling campaign.
The buffer zone of parental advice and family recreation, of schools, colleges, universities and other places where youths spend time, can help build their immunity.
The stakes could not be higher.
“Stop now before you lose everything – money, career, future or even your life,” one former football gambling addict said recently.
