Raising kids to question can pose problems

Raising kids to question can pose problems

Re: “Parents crucial amid this crisis in Thai learning”, Have Your Say, September 28.

In response to Dirk Sumter’s ideas regarding parental education, I would like to warn him that it does have its problems.
My son is 27 and doing a university course in his spare time. I taught him to ask questions and not accept “because I said so” as an answer.
His Thai teachers have never been happy at having to answer queries from a seven-year-old. Even at university, despite his good work, he gets low grades compared with “yes men”. His only option is self-employment because he sees through corruption and nepotism and doesn’t like staying silent. But speaking out is not always advisable.
