Snuff out smouldering scandal over wooden Suvarnabhumi terminal

Re: “Planned wooden airport terminal sparks fire concern”, National News, September 7.

The Prayut Chan-o-cha government should change its plan to build a new terminal at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Firstly, neither the Architect Council of Thailand nor the Engineering Institute of Thailand were consulted, sparking rumours that the project is both corruption-prone and poses a risk to human lives.
Secondly, the Airports of Thailand-approved design of the terminal involves using mostly wood as the construction material. This will fall short of the standards demanded by the US National Fire Protection Association – to which Thailand is a
signatory – and will pose a huge fire risk.
Thirdly, in agreeing to this design, Airports of Thailand has switched the site of the new terminal to a northeasterly position instead of the original southerly location. This is contrary to the original masterplan delivered by a consortium of foreign and Thai experts.
Finally, even before its construction, the Terminal 2 project has become an international scandal over fears it is both corruption-prone and a huge risk to human life!
Hence, the Prayut government should avoid future liability over its decision to approve this plan.
