Tastebud-teasing, climate-cooling festival over all too soon

Tastebud-teasing, climate-cooling festival over all too soon

Re: “Slash meat consumption to save climate, says study”, World, October 12, and “Study warns meat consumption is overheating planet”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

I write this on the last day of the annual nine-day Vegetarian Festival. For the past eight days, I have been porking out (oops, wrong term –make that “tofu-ing out”) on delicious Chinese vegetarian delicacies. I would love to continue, but alas, the festival comes to a cruel and totally unjustifiable end today.
Thailand could contribute its might to the reduction of meat consumption on this planet, hence to the lessening of global warming, by simply extending the Vegetarian Festival so that it lasts all year long. What would be wrong with that? The vendors of vegetarian food would benefit, their customers would benefit, and the planet would benefit. This is a no-lose, all-win proposition for everybody. All it would take is a little imagination on the part of whoever decides these things. Let’s have the Vegetarian Festival all year long.
