Failure should never be the reason for suicide

Re: “Lampang teenager drowns after jumping into Wang River”, Around Thailand, November 22

It’s sad to learn that an 18-year-old killed himself by jumping into the Wang River at 4am on Thursday.

It’s even sadder to hear his grandfather say the young man became depressed after failing the entrance exams for the Police Academy twice.

Nobody should feel sorry for himself for failing to join the police force.

When asked how it felt to fail 1,000 times before his invention of a light bulb was successful, Thomas Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times – the light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

Hence, society must teach our young to accept failures with a strong dose of self-acceptance, courage and resiliency.
