Advice for any gods thinking of running for election

Advice for any gods thinking of running for election

Re: “Six ‘Gods’ to vote in East Java election”, Quick News, February 27.

My heart leapt when I read that six Indonesians named Tuhan (God) will vote in an upcoming election. Only vote? They should be candidates.
We are not told what offices will be up for grabs in this election, but it would certainly be appropriate to have Gods seated in the Indonesian legislature, and even in the presidency. A President God would be sure to steer Indonesia in a divine direction. On the other hand, I must caution all six Gods about the folly of mixing religion with politics. The deity worshipped by Jews, Christians and Muslims demonstrated considerable political incompetence by allowing Himself to be beguiled into appointing Saul as the first king of Israel. (See I Samuel, chapters 8-12.) Subsequently Saul proved unstable, God changed his mind, and he appointed David to be king. (I Samuel 15-16.) This set the stage for the two rival claimants to precipitate a civil war. Since then, that deity has wisely kept out of politics, and his Indonesian counterparts would be advised to do likewise.
We might wish that Thailand had a God to run in our own election, less than a month hence. It would add a welcome touch of excitement to the current boring political scene. But Thailand is a Buddhist country, the idea of a Supreme Being is an alien concept, and the major claimant to the title would be disbarred for not being a Thai citizen.
