Thaksin loyalists should ask themselves what kind of “democratic heroes” they are when they say Thaksin should not be mentioned in the context of Thai politics.
In any democracy, criticism of politicians should be considered a must. And if we were to choose the most polarising and hypocritical of them all in Thai politics at this moment, it is Thaksin.
Thaksin has vowed many times to wash his hands of politics – but each time reneged on his promise.
Therefore, Thaksin could only avoid criticism or mention in Thailand under one of two conditions:
First, he vows to wash his hands of politics one more time – and this time keeps his word.
Second, he passes away.
