Beady-eyed crowing atheists are missing the big picture

Re: “Religion is a poor guide to life’s mysteries”, Have Your Say, April 26.

Christian Knottone stated, “religion is childish, superstitious nonsense”. I challenge him to find one iota of childish, superstitious nonsense in Longchenpa’s “The Practice of Dzogchen”, a Tibetan Buddhist text composed in the 14th century.
Contemporary science and education rarely produces someone capable of truly appreciating and applying the priceless wisdom contained in this and similar texts.
Christian Knottone, rather than looking deeply into what religion has to offer, is merely content to be self-congratulatory about its dismissal.
The first thing to be understood about religion is that it is not founded upon knowledge but rather insight. Knowledge is a hedge against fear and what we use to build up the self, insight is our best tool for recognising the self’s illusory nature and transcending fear and suffering. The choice is a most important one.
