Thailand has its own unique (and delicious) family planning programme

Re: “Human irresponsibility a threat to life”, Have Your Say, May 21.

Those who read in yesterday’s Letters page about the global Planned Parenthood organisation would do well to remember that Thailand has long had family planning programmes. The Population and Community Development Association (PDA), formerly called the Community-Based Family Planning Service, was founded by Mechai Viravaidya in 1974. He realised that something needed to be done to reduce family sizes in Thailand. Large families were clearly a cause of rural poverty.
Khun Mechai also established the Cabbages and Condoms chain of restaurants, which I am glad to say are vegetarian friendly. All profits go to support the PDA and its programmes in primary health, education, HIV/Aids, rural development, environment and water, etc.
