Dubfire comes in for a landing

One of the world's busiest and most successful DJs gets a Glow on in Bangkok tomorrow

RETOX SESSIONS is bringing back techy tunes with guest DJ Dubfire at Glow tomorrow. After relentlessly touring the world for the past year, playing at every major festival on the planet, Dubfire returns to make a stop in Bangkok for one of his more intimate shows.
The Grammy-winning recording artist is renowned for his seamless sets, groundbreaking music and an innovative label, SCI+TEC.
Also widely recognised as one of electronic music’s most versatile artists, Dubfire initially brought a pioneering sound to the masses during his days as one-half of the distinguished DJ & production duo Deep Dish. That collaboration led to a catalogue of timeless dance classics, a Grammy for remixing Dido’s “Thank You” and numerous international awards.
During his youth the American-Iranian DJ listened to mostly classic hip-hop, jazz, rare groove, dub reggae, new wave and industrial and was also influenced by the local punk scene and the music of Washington-based bands like Fugazi and Minor Threat.
Dubfire frequented a local record store called Yesterday And Today Records, where he became acquainted with the sounds of artists like Kraftwerk, Ministry, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Depeche Mode, Nitzer Ebb, Adrian Sherwood of On-U Sound and Einsturzende Neubauten.
“I try to apply a punk ethic to my own music. It has to be groundbreaking, futuristic, unique and organic,” he once told an interviewer.
After 14 year in Deep Dish, Dubfire decided to go solo in 2006, but he stayed true to his convictions and was duly rewarded. Early solo productions came in the form of a massive string of releases including “Ribcage”, “Roadkill”, “Emissions” and “I Feel Speed”.
With each release, Dubfire’s profile soared higher. The accolades and achievements came thick and fast – two top-10 tracks in Resident Advisor’s 100 Most Charted Records of 2007, DJ Magazine’s Player of the Year in 2008, nominations as Beatport’s Best Minimal Artist and Best Techno Artist in 2008 and 2009, covers on countless music magazines and much more.
In 2008 Dubfire remixed Radio Slave and Danton Eeprom’s “Grindhouse”, a track that has come to encapsulate everything he stands for today: dark funky rhythms and technological brilliance. The remix crossed nearly every genre and was the apex of a unique sound DJ Magazine labelled “jet black, polished chrome techno”.
This success led to collaboration with pioneering UK outfit Underworld, resulting in two tracks, “Bird 1” and "Grace” on the band’s 2010 long-player “Barking”.
All the while Dubfire has grown SCI+TEC into a home for emerging and established talents and has launched label showcases across the globe.
After more than 20 years behind the deck and in the studio, Dubfire continues to make his mark on the future of electronic music. Strongly rooted in where he came from, yet always evolving, Dubfire continues to pioneer music that sets the standard and has earned him the title “the DJ’s DJ”.
Opening the gig at Glow is Bangkok-based superstar DJ Sunju Hargun.
