Setting traffic checkpoints right
After receiving a lot of complaints, the Metropolitan Police Bureau has instructed traffic police to set up proper checkpoints instead of ambushing motorists and warned that supervisors who cannot control this operation might face a transfer.
Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner Panu Kerdlarppol, who oversees the traffic-control department, said yesterday that he had instructed all police-station superintendents to stop officers in charge of traffic from setting up checkpoints at risky areas such as the end of a bridge. He said they had also been told not to just focus on motorcycles and pickup trucks, but on all traffic violators.
Starting this month, police will keep a close eye out for fake licence plates and other criminal activities. Between January and July, 165 cars were found with fake licence plates.
He added that motorcyclists who rode against the traffic, especially on Bang Na-Trat and Vibhavadi-Rangsit roads, would be fined Bt500 each.
