Former deputy PM Pao Sarasin dies

Pao Sarasin, who was once chief of the Royal Thai Police and served as deputy prime minister, died of a blood infection at Siriraj Hospital on Thursday night. He was 83 years old.

 

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn represented His Majesty the King in granting water for Pao’s bathing rite, which was held at 6pm yesterday at Benjamabophit Temple in Bangkok. 
Pao was a son of former prime minister Poj Sarasin and Thanpuying Siri Sarasin. After his graduation from Vajiravudh College, he furthered his education in the United States. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and a bachelor’s in criminology from the University of California. 
After his return to Thailand, Pao entered the police service in 1954. He rose through the ranks to become a police general and chief of the Royal Thai Police in 1987. 
He served as deputy prime minister and interior minister in the post-coup government of Anand Panyarachun in 1992.
Pao was married to Thapuying Tawika Sarasin. They had three sons, among them TV host Kanit Sarasin.
