Police chief calls for sympathy for ‘gang rape’ victim

Police have called for the public to show sympathy for a girl who was allegedly gang-raped several times last year.

“As you follow news, members of media and the public should sympathise and empathise with the girl,” Phang Nga’s police chief Pol Maj General Boontawee Toraksa said Thursday.
He said police were in the process of gathering evidence to seek arrest warrants for the suspected rapists.
“If you have evidence or information useful for the investigation, please come forward,” Boontawee said.

The alleged victim, now 15, is reportedly traumatised and emotionally fragile. The sexual crimes against her allegedly took place in a small village in Phang Nga’s Takua Thung district.
A 17-year-old girl who identified her as another victim has denied being sexually assaulted.
The older girl’s testimony has led to speculation that the rape claim might have been fabricated.
Arunroj Sudenson, an imam at the village where the crimes allegedly took place, said officials should determine if the girl’s mother and stepfather had abused or manipulated the child.
