Top brass in South ambushed
Insurgents in Pattani ambushed the Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre chief's motorcade yesterday, but no casualties were reported.
Director Phanu Uthairat’s vehicle was travelling through an isolated road in Panare district, when insurgents opened fire at the threecar motorcade.
The 10man security detail returned fire and backup troops arrived later to search the area, but the attackers had fled. However, they found 15 spent cartridges of M16 and AK47 assault rifles.
A motorcade escorting Pattani governor Niphon Naraphithakkul was attacked in April on the same road.
