Yingluck to attend Thai show at Davos summit

Thailand will host a "Thai Night" extravaganza at next week's World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra leading a delegation of about 20 officials and business leaders to the premier global business event.

The highlight of the Thai Night will be a fashion show on January 27. The premier and her delegates will arrive after an official visit to India.

Thailand is due to play host at this year’s World Economic Forum Asia/Pacific due to take place from May 31-June 1. High-level involvement at Davos is designed to boost the country’s image and attract participants to the Bangkok forum, officials said.
In Davos, Yingluck will deliver the opening remarks in a session on “Women as the Way Forward”. Others taking part in the session will include Michelle Bachelet, under-secretary-general at the United Nations; Sheryl Sanberg, CEO of Facebook Inc; Archbishop Desmond Tutu from South Africa; and Talal al-Zain, CEO of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding.
Deputy Prime Minister Kittirat Na-Ranong will speak in a session on “Tough Choices in a Time of Crisis” – with Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault-Nissan Alliance; Yukio Edano Yukio, Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry; and Brian Duperreault, CEO of Marsh & McLennan Co.
Other Thai delegates include Bangkok Bank President Chartsiri Sophonpanich, PTT CEO Pailin Chuchottaworn, Thai Airways International president Piyasvasti Amranand, Thai Bev CEO Thapana Sirivadhanabakdi.
The Nation will be represented by Pana Janviroj in his capacity as executive editor of the Asia News Network. He will be joined by the editors of The Statesman, India and China Daily Asia-Pacific.
All eyes will be on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who will deliver the opening address at the WEF on the ongoing Euro crisis.
Organisers say more than 2,600 people will participate in this year’s event, a record number. Close to 40 heads of state or government will take part, with over 1,600 business leaders from the Forum’s 1,000 member companies, plus social entrepreneurs, young global leaders and representatives from civil society, media, academia and the arts.
This year’s theme is “The Great Transformation: Shaping New Models”, which reflects the need for a profound overhaul in the face of a fraying global financial system and lingering economic malaise.
“Capitalism, in its current form, no longer fits the world around us. We have failed to learn the lessons from the financial crisis of 2009. A global transformation is urgently needed and it must start with reinstating a global sense of social responsibility,” said Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum.
The four sub-themes of the event reflect the interconnected nature of the changes Schwab says are needed: Growth and employment models; Leadership and innovation models; Sustainability and resource models; Social and technological models.
The Forum will welcome close to 40 heads of state or government, including leaders from Azerbaijan, Canada, Denmark, Ethiopia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Guinea, Haiti, Ireland, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Poland, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, South Sudan, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
Other public figures who will attend include US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, chief executive of Hong Kong SAR Donald Tsang, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde, World Bank president Robert B Zoellick, secretary-general of the League of Arab States Nabil Elaraby and Egypt’s presidential candidates Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh and Amr Moussa.
