EC to discuss Rak Thailand dispute

EC to discuss Rak Thailand dispute

The Election Commission (EC) will meet today to discuss the status of MPs in Chuwit Kamolvisit's Rak Thailand Party, commission member Sodsri Satayathum said yesterday.

Sodsri, who is in charge of political party affairs and referendums, said the appointment of a panel of inquiry had been proposed due to doubts that the signature on MP Chaiwat Krairiksh’s resignation letter is genuine.

The EC could not declare that Chaiwat was no longer a House member as long as the doubts persisted, she said.

Sodsri said it was for the National Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate a video clip submitted by Chuwit accusing Chaiwat of corruption.

Answering reporters’ questions, Sodsri said that according to the Constitution, Chuwit, as party leader, can terminate an individual’s party membership if they violate party regulations.

Chuwit said last week he had informed the EC that two MPs from his party had resigned. He accused Chaiwat and Protepran Tohranee of abusing their positions as MPs and of interfering in the allocation of the government’s budget.

He said Chaiwat resigned as secretary-general of the party on January 9 and quit the party on January 11.

However, Chaiwat denied resigning as an MP, saying he had only quit as party secretary-general.

Chaiwat, who co-founded the party with Chuwit, said on Sunday that he had filed a libel suit against Chuwit at Dusit police station over the corruption allegation.

Rak Thailand has four party-list House seats. Should Chaiwat and Protepran lose their positions, deputy party secretary-general Sompetch Taengngam and party treasurer Wutthaichai Chankasem would replace them.
