Police go on hunt for defence volunteer killers

Police raided more than 100 houses in Narathiwat's Chanae district Thursday morning searching for the killers of two defence volunteers on Tuesday.

More than 100 paramilitary rangers and police officers descended on several sites in the district at dawn on Thursday to look for suspects in the shooting at a checkpoint, which left two men dead.

The authorities searched 150 houses, seizing two rifles and three boxes of M16 and .22 calibre ammunition.
Two security volunteers who had stayed behind after two of their companions had gone for nightly prayers were shot dead by insurgents on Wednesday.
The four attackers on two motorcycles opened fire at them, killing one immediately and fatally wounding another. The second victim was pronounced dead later in hospital.
The attackers then snatched four assault rifles and fled, in what is believed to be a new strategy among insurgent groups.
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man surrendered to police under a government project allowing suspects to turn themselves in and join the army’s training programme to adjust their attitude.
The suspect denied any involvement in insurgent activities but confessed that he was connected with illegal oil trading.
