Myanmar media censorship to end next month

Yangon - The Myanmar government's strict censorship of political news content will cease next month with the establishment of a press council, media industry sources said Friday.

"After the formation of the press council, all publications will be allowed to go under a check-after publish system,"Information Minister Kyaw Hsan told a group of local publishers.

Under the current system, controlled by the Information Ministry, weekly news publications must submit articles on political subjects to a government censorship board prior to publication.

Last year, the government eased censorship restrictions on non-political subjects such as entertainment, culture and social issues.

Once a press council is established in June, even political news will be free of prior censorship.

Members of the press council will initially be appointed by President Thein Sein, who has initiated a host of reforms since he came to power in March 2011.

The council, comprising members of the Myanmar media, will be responsible for "self-regulating the local press, introducing journalistic ethics and providing training," said one Yangon-based publisher who asked to remain anonymous.//DPA
