Security strengthened after Yala bomb attack

Yala authorities have strengthened security in the province following a car bomb attack in its Raman district that killed five police on Wednesday.

Yala Governor Detraj Simsiri said the Wednesday fatal attack has caused panic among the public as insurgents previously focused their attack in the downtown.

“But this time, the insurgents attacked in the outer area like Raman district which is different from before. Authorities concerned should have to analyse the situation,” the governor said.
On Wednesday, the six-man squad from Tha Thong Police Station, which was assigned to escort teachers at U Poh Shool, was on a mobile patrol before arriving near a bridge where a silver Isuzu pickup truck with hidden explosives was parked. The truck exploded, hitting the police vehicle.
The detonation method, such a remotely by wire, mobile phone or twoway radio, and the types and quantities of explosives were not yet identified.
The governor claimed change of target may be caused because the insurgents could not penetrate into the downtown because of security, so they turned to the areas outside.
After the incident, the governor said, he already assigned security agencies to strengthen the safety and security for people and government premises.
Meanwhile Pol Col Sukhon Sriarun, a Yala police chief, said a joint police force of Raman and Kotabaru districts on Thursday conducted 18 separated raids in Raman, Kotabaru and Thathong district to hunt for the culprits and to collect evidence following the Wednesday attack.
He said the raid at a house of Kaman Chaichana in Tambon Wangpaya of Raman district found a mobile phone clip showing a scene just after the attack in Raman district.
A suspect was also detained for further investigation to know the intention of the clip.
Witnesses meanwhile told police that the a pickup followed the pickup of police on Wednesday. After the explosion hit the police pickup, about ten men wearing hoods jumped out of the vehicle, run to the scene and snatched six M4 carbines, two handguns and three bullet proof vests before escaping.
