Security beefed up in Songkhla

Songkhla police stepped up security on Thursday following intelligence reports that three notorious insurgents were planning more car bomb attacks in this southern province.

As part of the beefing up of security measures, Provincial Police Bureau 9 Deputy Commissioner Pol Maj Gen Thanit Sakthirasawat and Songkhla police chief Pol Maj Gen Suwit Choensiri chaired a ceremony to launch patrol operations by 300 policemen in downtown Hat Yai.
Police also distributed posters of stolen vehicles that the insurgents might use in car bomb attacks.
Provincial Police Bureau 9 Commissioner Pol Lt Gen Jakthip Chaijinda said 19 stolen vehicles - 14 pick-up trucks, 4 cars and a van - could potentially be used in car bomb attacks. Police also distributed copies of 20 fake license plates that might be used for the stolen vehicles.
The posters were put up in communities and in Hay Yai’s commercial areas. Members of the public were asked to immediately alert the authorities if they spotted suspicious vehicles.
A security source said intelligence agencies had learned that three suspected RKK leaders would launch car bomb attacks in Hat Yai. The three are Seri Waemamu, Russalan Baima and Jehma Wani. All are suspected of involvement in car bomb attack against the Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel in Hat Yai on March 31.
