Gaur shot for meat in national park

Gaur shot for meat in national park

The carcasses of two large gaurs were found at the Nam Nao National Park in the northern province of Phetchabun, apparently killed by hunters who were after their meat for lovers of exotic game.

Rangers from the Nam Nao National Park and Pha Daeng Wild Life Reserve together brought the male gaurs, a wild relative of the cow, each weighing more than 900kg, from the forest, Thai News Agency reported Tuesday.
Shotgun wounds were found on their bodies, and three legs had been cut off. It was initially believed that local hunters illegally entered Pha Daeng Wild Life Reserve and killed the gaurs to get their flesh for sale.
Information release indicates that seven gaurs have been killed but only two carcasses have been found. The national park has set up a special force to patrol the forest to prevent more killings of the endangered species.
