It is not wrong to work on a Friday : Chula Ratchamontri

Chula Ratchamontri Aziz Pitakkumpol has reiterated that Islamic teachings do not prohibit working on Friday and anyone threatening to prevent Muslims working on the day can be considered as violating basic human rights of others.

In three-page letter to Southern Border Provinces Administration, Aziz said working on Friday does not go against Islamic teachings. Allah the Great wants Muslims to work so that they can earn necessities for themselves and not become burdens for others.

“As we have to consume everyday, Islam does not prohibit working everyday even on Friday which is an important religious-related day. What Islam says is that one should not give more importance to working for income more than to Friday’s praying,” said the letter to SBPA’s secretary general Thawee Soddong.

The letter was in response to Thawee’s query to the Islamic spiritual leader following the distribution of leaflets in deep southern provinces warning people not work on Friday, claiming it is prohibited by Muslim teachings. Those who work on the day have been threatened with violence.

Residents in the provinces decided to shut their business on Friday out of fear for their lives and their safety.

Chula Ratchamontri also said threatening others to stop working on Friday is a total violation of basic rights of others and is considered as false claim of Islamic teachings for one’s own benefits. The SBPA will publish the letter in three languages; English, Thai and Malay, and distribute it to people in five deep southern provinces at the earliest opportunity.
