Thai temple provides accommodation for Thais stranded in New York

A Thai temple in New York has provided accommodation for four Thais stranded in the metropolis after their flights were cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, Thai Foreign Ministry's deputy spokesman Damrong Kraikruan said Tuesday.

The Thais sought help from the Consulate General last week as many flights were suspended pending the Hurricane, he said.
After a night of fires, downed trees and roofs blown off buildings, Superstorm Sandy's eye passed through the region and the weather system was now heading to central Pennsylvania.
However, Sandy was still bringing some rain and wind to the east coast. Damrong said the Thai Consulate General in New York would continue to monitor the situation and was ready to help Thais if requested.
Damrong earlier said the Thai Consulate General in New York City had closely monitored the progress of massive storm Sandy, which engulfed much of the New Jersey and Delaware coast on Monday.
Its staffs are keeping track of and coordinating with Thais living in the metropolitan area as well as with Thai associations and Buddhist temples. He said the consulate general had prepared measures and procedures in case of emergency to assist Thai citizens.
There are some 30,00040,000 Thais living in New York City and 10,000 in nearby areas, who had the potential to be affected by the hurricane. He said that Thai nationals can directly contact the consulate general and that there are also some networks of Thais in the US, which always provide information to each other.
He said he believed that all Thais in stormaffected areas had received information and were well prepared for the storm.
