Customs gets strict ahead of New Year

The Customs Department has intensified its crackdown on smuggled contraband, particularly oil and LPG, in the run up to the New Year, director general Benja Louischaroen said yesterday.

Benja, who led a press conference held to display items seized previously, said a raid on a fishing vessel near Mun Nok island off Rayong on Saturday resulted in 310 cooking gas tanks, worth Bt6 million, being seized.
Other products included 80 iPhones worth Bt2.4 million and 500 tanks of Genetron R12 refrigerant worth Bt1.3 million. The department also confiscated 1,299 yaba tablets and 20,000 Valium tablets worth Bt 7.9 million concealed in a parcel heading for Israel.
