Software developer McAfee returns to US after Guatemala expels him

Washington - US software millionaire John McAfee arrived in Miami after being deported from Guatemala in a bizarre journey that began after he became wanted for questioning in the killing of his neighbour in Belize, a newspaper reported.

McAfee, 67, was escorted off a plane Wednesday night by federal agents, the Miami Herald said.

He said in a posting on his blog that the agents questioned him and then asked him where he wanted to go. He said he requested to be taken to a taxi stand, which they did, and he was released. He went to a hotel and has no money, he posted.

McAfee, who developed and marketed the anti-virus software of the same name, has been wanted by Belize police since fellow US expatriate Gregory Viant Faull was found fatally shot last month in his home on Ambergris Caye.

McAfee applied for political asylum in Guatemala, claiming police in Belize want to kill him because he refused to pay a bribe. McAfee was detained in Guatemala Thursday, and President Otto Perez refused to grant him asylum.

In an internet broadcast Sunday while in detention in Guatemala, McAfee said he wanted to return to the United States to settle down to a "normal life."   "I simply would like to live comfortably day by day, fish, swim, enjoy my declining years," he said.//DPA
