Three monks killed in tragic UK car smash

The Thai consul in London is visiting two Thais who survived a headon car crash in Scotland in which three Thai monks were killed, the Thai Foreign Ministry said.

One of the three victims was from Wat Mahathat in Bangkok and was residing in a Thai temple in Wales, the second was from a Thai temple in Scotland and the third was from a Thai temple in London.

Police in Scotland are investigating the incident and the bodies will be sent to the temples when the investigation is completed.

The three monks were killed on Tuesday in the east of Scotland when their car crashed headon with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, the BBC reported.

The monks were passengers in the back seat of the Nissan Note. The female driver managed to get herself free.

The Nissan was heading north when it crashed with a Skoda Octavia being driven in the opposite direction about two kilometres south of Pathhead in Midlothian, just after 7.30am local time, on the A68 in the east of Scotland. The car ended up on its roof.

The monks died at the scene. The male front seat passenger in the Nissan was cut out of the wreckage by the fire crew.

The two survivors from the Nissan were taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and treated for injuries not believed to be lifethreatening, Lothian and Borders Police said.

The Skoda's male driver was also taken to hospital, but did not suffer serious injury.
The A68 was closed near the scene of the crash to allow police to carry out a crash investigation and reopened later.

BBC quoted Inspector Simon Bradshaw, of Lothian and Borders Police, as saying: “This is a tragic incident, and we are currently in the process of carrying out inquiries in order to establish the full circumstances of the collision.

"At this time, I am appealing to anyone who noticed the gold coloured Nissan Note or the silver Skoda Octavia on the A68 this morning, to get in touch.”
