Klong Toei fire razes 39 home; no injuries reported

A fire yesterday in the Charoensuk community on Rama IV Rd in Bangkok's Klong Toei area burned down 39 houses, leaving many residents to seek refuge at local temple or relatives' houses.

Thong Lor police station investigator Pol Lieutenant Songtham Worapan said the fire, which broke out at about 8.30am yesterday, started in a commercial building before spreading to nearby shop houses. There were no reports of injury or deaths. It took fire-fighters with 30 fire engines over an hour to put out the blaze because the only access was through a small alley. The alley was crowded with onlookers and panicking residents trying to move their belongings out. The shop houses in the area were made of wood. One housed a leather-making business that stored highly flammable chemicals like glue and thinner solution.
Klong Toei district chief Wiparan Chainukit, who inspected the scene, said 39 houses were damaged but the cause of the fire was unknown, pending a police investigation. The district office in the meantime would set up a tent to gather complaints from those affected by the fire, while many residents would have to temporarily stay at a local temple or relatives’ houses.
