New Zealand group campaigns for multi-partner marriages

Wellington - A New Zealand group is calling on the government to legalise multi-partner marriages.

The group, Support Legalised Polyamory in New Zealand, set up a Facebook page just before parliamentarians voted to legalise gay marriage on April 17.
The group defines multi-partner marriage as a responsible, adult, and committed form of relationship between any gender and says the time is now right to discuss the issue.
In a mission statement on its Facebook page, the group says several Members of Parliament around the world have come out as 'Poly' and 'Poly-Friendly'.
"And it seems the time is right to at least bring it to the attention of the New Zealand public and New Zealand Parliament. This will be a long term project but with the rest of the world getting on the band wagon, legal multiple-partner marriages and unions may one day be accepted."
The minority Conservative Party had earlier cautioned that legalizing gay marriage was a slippery slope towards polyamory and polygamy.
Leader Colin Craig said legalising gay marriage created a precedent for further redefinition of marriage, which he had been against from the start.
