Laotians sought for labour offices

Laotians sought for labour offices

Thailand has called for more Laotian staff at immigration and labour offices to cope with the large number of Lao workers seeking employment here, Labour Minister Phadermchai Sasomsap said yesterday.

The move was one of many agreements backed by officials from both countries at a second joint Cabinet retreat held on Sunday.
Some 66,000 Laotians are registered to work in Thailand, but only 2,300 have documents to verify this. Phadermchai expressed fear that the slow progress with documents may drag out past a deadline for foreign workers to register here.
An MoU between both countries agreed that more Laotian personnel should work at labour migration offices in Thailand, which have been upgraded to a one-stop service. Currently, too few Laotian workers have been recruited for work at those offices.
Phadermchai said slow progress would encourage illegal smuggling and human trafficking. There are seven Laotian staff, but Phadermchai did not say in the MoU how many more were wanted.
Thailand has postponed the deadline to register foreign workers twice – amid controversy that the registration process is too complex and plagued by corruption. It is not known if the next deadline will be extended further beyond August.
