Banners in South accuse Thais of insincerity

Banners accusing the Thai authorities of insincerity, have been hung in three southern border provinces, one day before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The cloth banners were discovered early this morning along roads in many locations in the deep southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. The banners, written in Melayu with the Rumi alphabet, carried antigovernment messages accusing the Thai authorities of insincerity and calling Thailand "the Siamese colonialists."
The military were urged to pull out of the southern provinces.
The Thai authorities, police and military alike, pulled down the banners and were trying to collect fingerprints and DNA hoping to find evidence of identity of those who made the banners.
The office of the Chularatchamontri, the spiritual leader of Muslims in Thailand, announced yesterday that Ramadan in Thailand would begin Wednesday. The Thai authorities have stepped up security measures during the period.
