Thailand to compete in inaugural Asia World Schools Debating Championship

Over 200 students from nine countries will attempt to win the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Cup at The 1st Asia World Schools Debating Championships (AWSDC) from August 1-7, hosted by Anglo Singapore International School in Bangkok.

Members of the Debate Society at Anglo Singapore International School have taken on the challenge, with the organising committee for the event consisting solely of students. Participants range from 13 to 18 years old and will be debating under the theme, “It’s Our Turn.”
Competitors from Malaysia, South Africa, South Korea, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand will join internationally renowned adjudicators during this competition.
Six Thai schools will be competing in English against other countries during the contest. The event also serves as an excellent opportunity for Thai students to put their English-speaking abilities to the test, while bridging the language and cultural gap with other Asean countries.
The AWSDC also aims to showcase the importance of young people taking on civic responsibility and actively participating in intellectual discourse.
“This tournament will challenge all participants to engage in a productive dialogue with peers from all over the world. Debate is a major tool for communication and discussion in both the local and international arena. With this event, we want students to learn and realise the importance of using debates as an effective communication in various situations,” said Julie Sutanto, director of Schools, Anglo Singapore International School.
