Pope sends his condolences after passing of top monk

The late Supreme Patriarch was the people's monk and his passing away is a great loss to the Thai society, Pope Francis said in his letter of condolence presented yesterday to Somdej Phra Wannarat, acting abbot of Wat Bovoranives.

Cardinal Paul Shang In Nam, who represents the Vatican in Thailand and Southeast Asia, paid a visit to the temple yesterday to hand over the pope’s message.
His Holiness used to be the abbot of Wat Bovoranives.
A group of accompanying Catholic priests also said a prayer in memory of the late monk.
Phra Sakkayawongwisut, the chief secretary of His Holiness, thanked the visitors and also expressed gratitude for the Sunday prayers held at every Catholic church in Thailand in honour of the late monk.
Archbiship Louis Chamniern Santisukniran said the Supreme Partiarch was a good ambassador and helped build a link between Buddhism and other religions in Thailand.
