Bid to curb violence against women

Bid to curb violence against women

Social Development and Human Security Minister Pavena Hongsakul has urged all Thais to join "International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women", when it is celebrated - on November 25.

In the weekly TV broadcast “Yingluck Government Meets the Public”, she said that data from the ministry’s hotline centre showed that most complaints reported involved human trafficking. During July 11 to November 13, the centre received over 10,000 complaints, including 900 involving domestic violence.
Today, a campaign will be launched at Thupatemee Stadium in Bangkok, chaired by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, and aimed at raising awareness of violence against women in Thai society. Another big event will follow on November 25, the globally celebrated international day, as designated by the United Nations General Assembly.
“We call for the elimination of violence to women 365 days of the year. Everyone must respect each other,” Pavena said.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women recognises that women around the world are regularly the victims of rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence. The day also highlights that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden from society.
Asked if “whistle blowing” – a strategy of anti-government protesters – was a form of violence, Pavena said yes, but noted that political protests were allowed, people should have respect for others. “Still, they can do what they want, as even Lord Buddha had to fight evil,” she said, before saying that whistle blowing was “bad manners”, and that people should behave in a way that encourages peace.
