Dept, Sukhothai Thammathirat to offer distance language courses for workers
The Department Of Skills Development has joined forces with Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU) to provide language courses via distance learning, starting with English and Chinese, from mid-December onwards.
After signing a cooperation agreement to arrange English- and Chinese-language training, department chief Nakhon Silpa-archa said the training would prepare Thai workers to be ready for the Asean Economic Community (AEC). The English course would initially cover 10 professions including tourism and hotels, nursing, and agriculture, he said.
If the workers had more questions after the training, the department would invite STOU lecturers to provide additional training so the workers could further improve their language skills. The department would also gather workers’ opinions on demand for foreign languages and request that STOU set up more language courses later on, he added.
According to STOU, the English and Chinese courses would be available via the STOU channel and www.stou.ac.th, offered in conjunction with other materials such as the university’s textbooks and videos.
He said the workers could also use the knowledge obtained from the training courses to apply to take a test at a STOU distance-learning centre in one of various provinces to get a certificate. If the workers managed to study 24 subjects, the work could be put towards bachelor of arts degrees at the university, he said.
