Rights dept follows up on clash victims
The Rights and Liberties Protection Department is in contact with police to compile a list of people affected adversely by the recent political unrest.
Since the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) launched its massive rally against the government, politics-related clashes have been linked to at least five deaths. A number of people were also injured, mostly by exposure to teargas.
“In the event of a death, the department can award compensation of Bt100,000,” department head Narat Sawettanan said yesterday. He said victims were only eligible if they had not broken any laws.
But his department would not make any payments, preferring to wait and see if Cabinet approves an Interior Ministry proposal for a more generous payouts.
Meanwhile, police yesterday sought court approval to detain a man for 12 days suspected of setting a bus ablaze on December 1.
The bus was parked at Rajamangala Stadium, where a large number of red shirts gathered late last month.
The red-shirt rally ended after bloody clashes with Ramkhamhaeng University students.
Adisorn Seejanpong, 29, confessed that he had broken into the bus to steal some valuables, but denied torching it.
