Water released to ease drought
With Upper Thailand reeling under a severe drought, Nakhon Ratchasima's Phimai Dam opened its six sluice gates to release 2 million cubic metres of water per day to downstream residents who live outside the irrigation zone and were suffering from shortage
A nearby irrigation canal’s two sluice gates were also opened to send 300,000 cubic metres of water to farmers in the irrigation system zone for rice paddies, which would yield crops soon.
In Khon Kaen, Eighth Infantry Regiment commander Col Chanchai Aim-on said the regiment camp could produce 900 cubic metres of tap water and 3,000 litres of drinking water per day and had prepared its manpower and water trucks to aid drought-affected residents in Khon Kaen and nearby areas on request.
In Phichit, the local irrigation office announced the closure of an inflated rubber dam installed in the middle of Yom River after the river was almost dry and no rainfall is expected in this period.
The nearly Bt300-million dam used to be the local residents’ hope to tackle drought instead of a large and permanent dam.
