Academic thumbs his nose at junta council
An anti-coup academic on the second summon list of 35 academics and activists issued by the military junta has said he will not report to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).
“To the Army chief, I am busy with teaching at the moment,” wrote political scientist Assoc Prof Pavin Chachavalpongpun of Kyoto University on his Facebook page yesterday. The message was written in Thai and English.
Ousted interior minister Charupong Ruangsuwan also announced yesterday that he would not report to the NCPO as summoned.
The leader of the Pheu Thai Party, Charupong said he would not bow to a military that seized the people’s power and he called the coup leaders rebels.
He said he was hiding in the Northeast and was safe.
Charupong posted his message on his Facebook wall in handwriting.
The junta yesterday issued another order, summoning 35 more prominent figures to report to it.
They included Sondhi Limthongkul, former co-leader of the People’s Alliance for Democracy, Suwat Liptapanlop, Worajet Pakeerat, an academic of the Nitirat group, Somsak Jeamteerasakul, and Pavin Chachavalpongpun.
Those on the new list and those summoned earlier have been ordered to report to the NCPO by 4pm Thursday.
Red-shirt leader Suporn Atthawong and a number of other red-shirt leaders in the Northeast yesterday reported to the military in Nakhon Ratchasima.
