Asean chair briefed on junta's roadmaps
Thai Foreign Ministry's permanent secretary Sihasak Puangketkaew today met Myanmar's Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin to brief him on Thailand's roadmaps for the political future following the seizing of power by the military, a ministry spokesman said.
The briefing to Myanmar, which is this year’s Asean chairman, aims to provide members of Asean with a better understanding on the latest situation as well as the facts, ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee said.
Asean countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam, have expressed concern at the situation in the country because they recognise the importance of Thailand, which is the second biggest economy of the grouping, Sek said.
“What happened in Thailand will certainly have an impact on the region but we have however confirmed that our positions on foreign affairs will remain the same,” he said.
The spokesman said he didn’t think that Asean would host a meeting to specifically discuss Thailand, adding such a meeting had never been held and that Asean was adhering to its noninference policy.
Latest information shows that 63 countries have now issued travel warnings for Thailand and 19 have recommended that their citizens avoid visiting the country.
The foreign ministry has sent a summary of the junta’s roadmaps to Thai ambassadors in foreign countries so they are able to provide explanations to the host countries.
