Thai students win silvers, bronze at maths Olympiad

THAI STUDENTS bagged four silver and two bronze medals at the 55th International Mathematics Olympiad.

The six returning students were received warmly by their families and friends, as well as Pornchai Inchai, deputy director of the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology, at a reception at the airport early yesterday.
The four silver medallists were Kritakorn Karntikul of Chulalongkorn University Demonstration School, Siwakorn Sa-ngunmoo from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, plus Phusit Wattanawongwiboon and Sucharn Wiwatsettachai from Triam Udom Suksa School. The two bronze winners were Thanat Komolsirisphakdi from Bangkok Christian College and Thee Ngamsaengrat of Triam Udom Suksa School.
The maths contest was held in Cape Town in South Africa from July 3-13 and attracted 560 students from 101 countries.
Thailand, along with Iran, ranked 21st among participants for the team’s combined effort in the competition, while the five top-scoring teams were from China, the US, Taiwan, Russia and Japan.
China and the US also scored the most gold with five medals each. Thailand will host the 56th Maths Olympiad at Chiang Mai University in July 2015.
