Free Thai Movement claims support from abroad

Jakrapob Penkair, secretary of the anti-junta Free Thai Movement, said his movement had won support from many countries, including the US, Australia, New Zealand and some in European nations.

In an interview posted on BBC Thai’s Facebook page, Jakrapob said Free Thai members had travelled around seeking support and were now engaging with the European Union to show that the political situation in Thailand had not yet improved and that the chance to return to democracy was not clear.
However, Foreign Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee dismissed Jakrapob’s claim, saying no European officials had confirmed talks with the Free Thai Movement.
Meanwhile, the ministry’s permanent secretary Sihasak Phuangketkeow played down a call yesterday by New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) for an amendment to the provisional charter, saying the group should look at the bigger picture and not make comments so soon. HRW wants the junta to amend the provisional charter, which gives it sweeping powers without accountability and has no safeguards against human rights violations.
