Myanmar government urged to redouble humanitarian efforts

Yangon - The United Nations on Thursday urged the Myanmar government and local aid organisations to continue humanitarian efforts in the violence-plagued western Rakhine state.

"Progress has been made since my last visit one year ago ... However, we must all redouble our efforts to do more," said John Ging, Director of Operations in the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
"The humanitarian situation is still unacceptably dire for far too many people," his statement added.
Myanmar should address the needs of vulnerable people and provide them with basic humanitarian assistance, said Haoliang Xu, UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific.
"More work is needed to improve relations between different ethnic groups in Rakhine and to find durable solutions for displaced people," he said.
The UN representatives praised efforts by the Myanmar government and aid groups in Rakhine State, where inter-communal violence between Muslims and Buddhists since 2012 has left thousands of people homeless, most of them Muslims.
