Dog meat seller charged

A 50-strong team of police and troops inspected seven locations early yesterday where local people have allegedly been butchering dogs in tambon Tha Rae in Sakon Nakhon's Muang and Phone Na Kaew districts.

They arrested one male suspect – Ekkachai Amchula, 25 – from a Tha Rae house along with 200 kilograms of frozen dog meat.
Ekkachai reportedly confessed that he ordered the dog meat at Bt50 per kilogram from Na Kae district to make jerky and distribute it in the area. So police initially charged him with illegally trading in animals without permission, according to the Animal Epidemics Act of 1956.
The meat was buried at a landfill by Livestock Development Department officials, who also sprayed the area with disinfectant.
Sakon Nakhon deputy police chief Colonel Thawatchai Hannathee said provincial police chief Pol Maj-General Polsak Banjongsiri instructed officers to crack down on people smuggling and butchering dogs in the area, as it was illegal.
