Australian maternity nurse caught stealing on Skype

Sydney (dpa) - A theft caught on a Skype video call has cost a nurse in Australia her job, the couple she stole money from in a maternity hospital told media Tuesday.

Nick and his wife Chrysa told Fairfax Media his father in Greece witnessed the theft at the Epworth Hospital in Melbourne on the instant messaging system.
Chrysa said her husband had left the room to help bathe their newborn when the nurse entered and went through his jacket and wallet. He said he saw her help herself to 20 Australian dollars (18 US dollars).
"My husband went back ... and his dad said to him, "'Check your wallet, because I saw a lady come into the room and she opened your wallet and took something red'," she said.
The man had put his father on hold on Skype.
"He saw a woman come into the room and she tried to open the wardrobe and was looking (around)," Chrysa said.
"Then she went to the chair - my husband's jacket was there - and she took the wallet and she opened it. Then we supposed it was a20-dollar note."
The couple reported the incident. "They gave us the 20 dollars back and said sorry," Chrysa said.
Epworth chief executive Alan Kinkade expressed shock and told Fairfax the hospital believed it was an isolated incident.
"As soon as we became aware of the incident, we conducted an investigation and that nurse is no longer with us," Kinkade was quoted as saying.
