Committee set up to deal with illiteracy

The Basic Education Commission has set up a committee to tackle illiteracy.

A report by Primary Education Service Area offices nationwide found that 35,000 out of 600,000 Prathom 3 students could not read or write at all, while 200,000 were struggling, secretary-general Kamol Raodklai said yesterday.
The task force would be led by Veena Akkharatham, a former adviser to the commission in learning procedure development.
It would determine the exact number of needy students, work with academics in creating innovative and suitable materials and train officials.
The literacy project would be launched next month and go into full swing next year, he added.
