No decision yet on satellite-TV stations that broke rules

No decision yet on satellite-TV stations that broke rules

A panel of the national broadcasting regulator has failed to make a decision on whether four political-leaning satellite TV stations should be banned for breaching an agreement with the regulator and an order of the junta.

Yesterday’s meeting of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission’s Broadcasting Committee could not reach a conclusion on this.
Panel members said they wanted to make sure they had enough information and evidence before deciding.
Acting NBTC deputy secretary-general Sombat Leelapata said yesterday his office had received a notice from the National Council for Peace and Order to look into the matter.
Initially, the NBTC found that the four satellite stations – Peace TV, 24 TV, Fa Wan Mai and 1 TV – had broadcast political messages that violated some of the watchdog’s laws and conditions.  The committee will convene again next Monday to discuss the matter.
The four channels were among 12 satellite TV stations suspended shortly after the May 22 coup.
