Two arrested for silver fraud, misusing shopowner's e-mail

Chiang Mai police have arrested a Nigerian man and his Thai girlfriend for allegedly impersonating another woman after stealing her e-mail password and duping her foreign clients into paying large sums for silverware, which they never received.

Shola Rotimi Oluwole and Wannakorn Sukming have been charged with illegally altering someone else’s information and stealing their identity under the Computer Crimes law. They have also been charged with fraud under the Criminal Code.
The victim, Achara Phatthong, who has a shop selling silverware in Muang district, told police that two of her clients complained that they had jointly paid Bt101,644 after allegedly receiving an e-mail from her offering to sell silverware at especially low prices.
The Nigerian and his girlfriend were arrested in Bangkok on January 13. Wannakorn said Oluwole had asked her to open an account with the Bank of Ayudhya, which he used to receive money from the two clients and used the bank’s cash card to withdraw it. The card was found on him after the arrests.
