UNHCR to check on number of Myanmar refugees
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will conduct a survey this month to determine the number of Myanmar refugees taking shelter in Thailand, a UNHCR representative said yesterday. The survey will kick off on Monday at Ban Nai Soy in
The plan was revealed yesterday at a meeting between heads of refugee camps in Tak’s Tha Song Yang, Phop Phra and Umphang districts. UN refugee agencies, along with representatives from non-governmental organisations, also attended talks presided over by Tak Governor Somchai Hatayatanti.
There are some 70,000 displaced persons from Myanmar living in border shelters at present and many of them have been there for more than 20 years, the meeting was told.
“The situation in Myanmar has returned to normal, so there is a need to send these people back,” the meeting was told.
