SSO backtracks on bill change

The Social Security Office is willing to return an important unemployment right to beneficiaries if the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) agrees to maintain this condition in a bill that is being scrutinised in its third hearing, the SSO inspector-gener

The SSO has dropped the condition that allows beneficiaries 30 per cent of their salary for three months if they resign voluntarily from their work, in a bill vetted by the junta-installed assembly, because no other social security service in the world would make such provisions, Kowit said.
Now, however, the SSO has decided to go back on its word as a network of employees and labour unions are threatening to stage protests.
The NLA is scrutinising the SSO bill in its second reading, with many members favouring this change. However, opponents of the change say some employees are forced to “resign” making their resignations look voluntary.
The NLA accepted the change in the first reading earlier this month, and this will undergo further vetting in the third reading next month. Employee networks and SSO beneficiaries will meet on February 7 and 14 to decide how they will protest if the NLA puts the change through in the third and final reading.
