Tourism worries over Krabi coal plant

Tourism worries over Krabi coal plant

Local tourist business operators yesterday objected to a plan to build an 870-megawatt lignite-powered electricity-generating plant in Krabi's Nuea Khlong district.

Koh Lanta tourism association president Theerapoch Kasirawat submitted the petition to Chanwit Pholcheewin, an inspector-general of the Tourism and Sport Ministry.
The plan has passed three public hearings and was being considered by the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning.
The group claimed the plant would transport lignite coal on the same route as a diving trail and mangrove forests, posing a risk to marine life if an accident occurred. Such an accident would affect local fishermen and their 400 trawlers because consumers in central Thailand would not be confident of buying seafood products caught by them.
The group claimed the project’s studies presented at the public hearings were also contradictory.
