Hearing on waste-to-power project canned amid huge local opposition

MORE THAN 1,000 local residents yesterday turned up at the public hearing held in Lampang province by VPN and Scimistric Company to oppose its waste-to-energy power plant project in their neighbourhood.

The meeting was scheduled to take place at Triam Udom Suksa Pattanakarn Khelangnakorn School to inform the public about the project and listen to their concerns.
The protesters wore black and held up banners proclaiming their disagreement with the waste-to-energy facility.
The event was called off by the company, but the villagers insisted on remaining in the vicinity and the forum was replaced by lectures from Akekasit Manarungroj, a well-known lawyer in Lampang.
A discussion on the proposed public hearing followed.
The proceedings were closely monitored by police.
Because the planned construction site for the 6.5-megawatt-per-hour plant is very near Ban Pa Haeng Village in Tambon Bo Haeo, the locals worry about potential pollution from the plant.
